This medication is a combined oral contraceptive and belongs to a group of medications often called “the pill.” It contains two hormones: an estrogen, called ethinyl estradiol, and a progestogen, called gestodene. These hormones prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg each month (ovulation). They also thicken the fluid (mucus) in your neck of the womb (cervix), making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg, and change the lining of your uterus (womb) to make it less likely to accept a fertilized egg. Medical research and extensive experience have shown that, if taken correctly, the pill is an effective, reversible form of contraception. This medication, like other hormonal contraceptives, will not protect you from HIV (AIDS) and other sexually transmitted diseases. Only a condom can do that.
